Long is the night,

long for the man

who cannot die, long

has his naked eye tottered

under street lamps, his eye

blinded with whiskey breath, and the smell

of wet flesh under his nails

doesn’t always kill the pain, oh God,

long is the night.

My hair won’t turn white

for 1 crawled from a womb of machines.

Rose Red smeared tar on my forehead

and curls, someone had strangled

her snow-white sister. But I,

the chief, strode through the city

of ten times a hundred thousand spirits, and my feet

trod on spirit lice beneath a leather sky, from which

ten times a hundred thousand peace pipes

were hanging, cold. The repose of angels

is what I’ve often wished for,

and hunting grounds filled

with the helpless wailing

of my friends.

ith spread-eagled legs and wings, the young ones overwhelm me with platitudes, over dung and daisies they went into those giant nights with their square-root secret, the legend of death fogs my window hourly with its breath.

Give me spurge milk and pour the laughter of the old
